Ten Commandments of Movie Making:
Survival Tips in the World of Cinematography
Written by Igal Peeri
1
When you are making a movie, you will find that you solve one problem, only to be faced with another. You'll solve that problem, and it will just lead you to the next one!
2
Don't try to run away from the problems. Face them head-on. The struggle and confrontation will enhance your creativity.
3
If you reach an impasse during an argument with one of your partners or even with yourself while making the movie – Stop! Suggest sleeping on it overnight. By the next morning, you won't believe what a difference one night can make!
4
Be sure to include all team members and actors in all the stages of movie making. After all, the movie belongs to them as well. Listen to what each of your team members has to say, down to the very last comment. In the end, you will be the one who makes the final decision, but listen and let each one have his/her say. You are not doing them a favor. They are doing YOU a favor by sharing their ideas and feelings with you.
5
When making a movie, never give up. That doesn't mean that you have to be inflexible. You can be convinced by new ideas and change your mind, but never give up. Never say "I can't take it anymore!"
6
Be courageous and try to clarify what is motivating you. Sometimes, you will find that you are being motivated by your own honor, or other such factors, and that you are being led in directions you never intended. If you don't keep your eyes open, such behavior could be to your disadvantage, and could ultimately cause the downfall of your movie.
7
True, you are the best director in the world, but make sure to take a good look at yourself every morning in the mirror. You will see that you shouldn't get carried away. It is you, after all.
8
Try to keep track of your status at all times. Review all suggestions with caution, and check to make sure they suit your needs.
9
Making a movie is an amazing gift that only a few people in the world are granted, and you are one of the lucky ones! Don't let anything spoil this tremendous adventure. Watch how your own
enjoyment spreads among your team members, and see how it gives your movie a boost of energy.
10
Good luck!
